Enhance Your Communication Skills by Cultivating Patience and Active Listening

presence; conversation, life, life lessons; active listening

Active listening is an essential skill that requires presence and control over your attention. The challenge is that people do not always speak in the way we would like them to. Sometimes they go off on tangents, other times they drag things out unnecessarily, and sometimes they struggle to say what they actually mean. If we lose our patience, all our efforts to be present go to waste.

Training Patience

It is crucial to train our patience. Often, we focus on how we will be perceived in moments when we choose not to say anything. However, to truly listen, we must overcome these concerns.

If we listen to someone long enough, even in silence, our mind continues to talk, whether we like it or not. Ideas pop up that we want to express as soon as they come to us. We interpret and filter what we hear through our perspective. We condemn or wonder how we would have acted in the speaker’s place. Sometimes we remember that we were in their shoes some time ago. Did we handle it well then? Better than them?
