Mirror Reflection
How It Influences Us and How We Can Manage Our Reactions
Not always do we get annoyed when a mirror is put in front of us.
The mirror can be a useful tool for checking our appearance and ensuring that we look good. However, there are a few reasons why people might feel frustrated or upset when they see a mirror:
- We notice flaws we didn’t want — The mirror shows us exactly how we look, and sometimes we may notice small imperfections that we hadn’t previously noticed or preferred to ignore. This can make us feel insecure or unhappy about our appearance.
- We become self-conscious — The mirror can make us more self-aware of ourselves and how we present ourselves to the world. This can be uncomfortable for some people, especially if they struggle with self-image.
- We are stressed or anxious — If we are already feeling stressed or anxious, what we see in the mirror can exacerbate these feelings. This happens because it allows us to focus on our perceived flaws. It’s not something that makes us feel better.
Overall, it’s preferable to have a positive relationship with the mirror. The mirror is just a tool. It’s just feedback.
“It’s not the things themselves that disturb us, but our perceptions about those things.” — Epictetus
